How do you fit the Zoo Hardware Lever on Rose?

These instructions are for use with the Zoo Hardware lever on rose being used with the Zoo Hardware sashlocks and latches. These sashlocks and latches allow for bolt through fittings to be used where others do not.

The steps for fitting are: -

1. Mark out Z1 for the spindle and then Z2 and Z3 at 38mm centres on either side. See Picture below.
2. Drill Z2 and Z3 using a 6mm drill bit.
3. Now drill Z1 using a 20mm drill bit.
4. Place the Spindle into one of the levers and securely fix it using the M6 grub screw. Ensure that there is enough spindal for the other handle to catch on to. Adjust till there is.
5. Put the spindal with the attached handle into the door ensuring that the holes in the handle line up with Z2 and Z3. 
6. Place the opposite lever on the spindal and secure using the m4 bolts provided ensuring that they are securely fitted.
7. Use the M6 grub screw to secure the spindal to the opposite lever.
8. Ensure that everything is secure and that the latch works well.
9. Screw/push on the rose.

We recommend that you use the bolt through fixings provided. This is due to the fact that it provides for a very secure handle. People have been known to use their own screws when attaching the handle instead of the bolt through fittings and this has lead to damage to the lock. The screws will never be as secure as the bolt through fittings also.

Using the grub screw provided to secure the spindle ensures that it stays in the handles and does not shift to one side. This is essential for the continued functionality of the handle.

Digit 1 - Category of use

   Four categories of use are identified:

      - grade 1: light duty

      - grade 2: medium duty

      - grade 3: heavy duty

      - grade 4: severe duty

Digit 2 - Durability

  Three grades are identified for single-axis hinges.

  They are manufactured to this European standard:

      - grade 3: 10000 test cycles , for light duty hingeson windows only

      - grade 4: 25000 test cycles, for light duty hinges on windows and doors

      - grade 7; 200000 test cycles, for medium, heavy and severe doors use.

Digit 3 - Test Door Mass

   Eight door figures are given to show the door mass the hinges are suitable for:

Digit 4 - Suitability for fire /smoke door use

   Two grades of suitability are identified for single-axis hinges:

      - grade 0: not suitable for fire.smoke resistant door assemblies.

      - grade 1: suitable for fire.smoke resistant door assemblies subject to satisfactory assessment of the contribution of the single-axis hinge to the fire resistance of the spceified fire/smoke door assemblies.

Digit 5 - Safety

  Only one grade is identified  as hinges must be safe.

Digit 6 - Corrosion Resistance

   Five grades of corrosion resistance are identified in accordance wih EN 1670:

      - grade 0: no defined corrosion resistance.

      - grade 1: mild resistance   

      - grade 2: moderate resistance

      - grade 3: high resistance

      - grade 4: very high resistance

Digit 7 - Security

   Two grades are identified:

      - grade 0: not suitable for use on burglar resistant door assemblies

      - grade 1: suitable for applications requiring a degree of security

Digit 8 - Hinge Grade

   Fourteen grades are identified in this European standard and are detailed below.

A brief guide to the Disabled Discrimination Act(DDA)

The Disabled Discrimination Act

This act pertains to public buidlings that regularly have the public coming and going. 

This is an act that makes in provides guide lines on how to avoid discriminating against anyone with a disability of any kind.
It deals with a few products and makes it clear what standards they have to meet.

Lever Handles
All handles should be return to door type with no sharp edges. It should have a minimum diameter of 19mm and should be securely fitted to the door with bolt through fixings.

Pull Handles
Pull handles should have be bolt through fixed and mounted on the rose to aid the partially sighted. The upper fixing of the handle should be at least 1400mm from the ground.

Kick Plates
To prevent damage to doors from wheelchairs, kick plates should be at least 400mm high.

Tonal Contrast
To assist the partially sighted, door furniture should contrast with the door by at least 20 points on the “light reflectance value” scale.

Cold to the Touch
External handles should not be cold to the touch. They can be Nylon, Wooded or Powder coated.

Please note that these are guide lines and are not always possible or practicle but it is recommended that you follow as many as you can. 

Also these are good guide lines if your building is likely to have children running around in it. The return to door levers are a must on doors as they have no sharp edges that could hurt a young child if they were to hit them.

What door furniture is needed for an internal door?

The average internal domestic wooden door needs only three things. To begin with it needs a pair of hinges and a lock. Then the individual can choose between either a handle or knob.  

The Hinges

The hinges are the first things you need for a door as it must be hanging before anything else is put on the door. The hinges for a domestic door are usually four inches with a pair being suitable for most internal doors but some people go for three depending on the weight of the door or whether it is a fire door. The hinges can be washered, ball bearing, plain or solid drawn depending on the customer preference. A spring hinge can also be used. This acts to close the door with out the need for a door closer. Zoo Hardware do a range of ball bearing and washered hinges in many finishes, Frisco do solid drawn hinges and Hoppe do spring hinges. We keep all in stock.

The Lock

The lock for an internal wooden door depends on a few things. First off is it being used with a knob or handle? These use different lock types the handle uses a lock that is either 2.5 inches depth into the door or 3 inches into the door. The knob uses a lock that goes either four, five or six inches into the door. This is necessary to avoid catching your knuckles on the frame of the door when opening it. 

Type of Lock

People usually choose which to go with based on the style of the house or personal preference but in some cases the door is already handing with the door cut out for a particular lock already. This is usually for a two and a half inch or three inch lock which means the people can't use a knob. This is something to be aware of.

Bathroom Locks

In addition to the type of lock being dependent on the handle or knob it can also be dependent on whether the lock is being used on a bathroom door. These locks vary in that the locking mechanism is suitable for either a bathroom turn. This allows a person to lock a bathroom door while allowing it to be opened from the outside using a coin in case of an emergency. 

Latches

While it is necessary to lock a bathroom door it is not necessary to lock all other doors. If people decide they can use a latch that doesn't enable the door to be locked but is alot cheaper and easier to fit. These are avaiable for Knobs and Handles.

Double Doors

In the case of double doors a rebated lock is needed. This allows one door to lock into another.

Handles

There alot of decisions made when picking a handle. First off you need to decide if you want a lever on plate or a lever on rose. There are examples below of both.

If you choose the lever on plate you can then choose which finish you like, either Brass, Polished chrome, Satin Chrome, Florentine Bronze or a combination of them. 

If you go with the lever on rose you need to decide on a finish as well. You also need to purchase accessories such as a bathroom turn and escutcheons.

Most people decide which finish they want then pick the type of handle that suits.

In the case of double doors people usually only put pair of handles on the door that is operating the lock. This of course is personal preference but there is no need for handles on both doors.

Accessories

In addition to the items I have laid out above other products are needed such as bathroom turns and escutcheons as I have said above. Also door stops maybe needed to protect the wall. These can be either floor or wall mounted depending on preference and/or application. 

In the case of double doors a flush bolt, surface bolt or door security bolt can be used to keep one of these in place. 

You may want to put a door closer on the door with concealed chain closers being easy for a domestic setting. This of course is not necessary if you have decided to use spring hinges.  

How to determine the handing of your door?

Here is just a brief explanation of how you determine the handing of your door. You will need to know the handing of the door for some products such as hinges and certain types of locks or handles.

The top picture shows how you determine the handing when the door is hung normally. Notice that it is determined by which side the door is hinged on. If the door is hinged on the right as it opens inwards then then it is right handed.

The bottom picture shows doors that are left and right hand reversed. This can be important for products such as night latches, mortice nightlatches and hinges.
